Penangkap belalang, Azman Nawi, 56, dari Kampung Rhu Muda, Marang, berkata, dia mula berjinak-jinak menangkap belalang kerek di kawasan semak dan kebun sekitar kampung sejak dua bulan lalu. Menurut Azman, kebiasaannya dia mencari belalang selepas waktu Isyak dan pernah mendapat kira-kira 15 ekor dalam satu malam. Katanya disamping dapat menyertai pertandingan bunyi belalang, dia juga dapat menambah pendapatan sampingan dengan menjual belalang itu pada harga RM10 seekor. Menurutnya meskipun agak susah menangkap belalang menggunakan tangan, namun kenangan paling manis adalah apabila dia pernah muncul sebagai johan dalam pertandingan belalang yang disertai. Minat sama turut dikongsi, Mohd Hakim Mohd Samsuria, 11, yang mempunyai seekor belalang kesayangannya bernama ‘Jimmy’. Katanya dia tertarik untuk membela ‘Jimmy’ kerana ia mempunyai keunikan dari segi kemerduan bunyi serangga dan sering dibawa menyertai pertandingan bunyi belalang. Menurutnya, setiap kali menyertai pertandingan, dia tidak meletakkan harapan tinggi untuk menang sebaliknya berpuas hati dapat menyertainya kerana boleh menambah ilmu berhubung penjagaan belalang. Tradisi pertandingan bunyi belalang kerek amat terkenal di negara jiran sebelum dibawa masuk ke Kelantan sejak berpuluh tahun lalu dan kini mula ‘merebak’ ke Terengganu. Penganjur pertandingan belalang, Norazme Mamat, 55, berkata, pertandingan bunyi belalang kerek bukanlah aktiviti baharu dalam kalangan penduduk Pantai Timur. Katanya pertandingan bunyi belalang kerek ini sangat popular sekitar tahun 80-an sebelum ia mula ditelan zaman. Bagaimanapun aktiviti ini kembali diminati masyarakat Melayu sejak akhir-akhir ini. Mahkamah menjatuhkan hukuman denda RM3,000 terhadap 32 tertuduh dan jika gagal bayar boleh dipenjara empat bulan. Dua lagi tertuduh berusia 19 tahun didenda RM2,000 atau penjara tiga bulan jika gagal membayar. Sementara itu, tiga daripada semua tertuduh didapati positif dadah, bagaimanapun, ketiga-tiga tertuduh mengaku tidak bersalah. Di Mahkamah Majistret, tertuduh mengaku bersalah bagi dua pertuduhan mengikut Seksyen 506 Kanun Keseksaan kerana mengugut mahu membunuh bapanya berusia 62 tahun. Kedua-dua kejadian itu berlaku di sebuah rumah di Parit Raja pada jam 10.30 pagi serta 11 malam, 7 April lalu. Berdasarkan fakta kes, pada hari kejadian, tertuduh naik marah apabila bapanya menegur supaya tidak mengambil bahan terlarang serta menolak kepala anak perempuannya berusia 13 bulan serta menghempas ke lantai. Bagi kesalahan itu, mahkamah menjatuhkan hukuman penjara masing-masing tiga dan empat bulan bagi kedua-dua pertuduhan dengan semua hukuman berjalan serentak bermula dari tarikh ditangkap, 8 April lalu. Sementara itu, di Mahkamah Sesyen, tertuduh mengaku mencederakan anak perempuan yang menyebabkan kanak-kanak terbabit mengalami kecederaan fizikal dengan kejadian berlaku pada jam 11 malam di rumah dan hari yang sama. Pertuduhan dikemukakan mengikut Seksyen 31 (1) (a). Daren berkata, sesi latihan kedua yang dijalani Zii Jia berjalan lancar dengan dia menunjukkan peningkatan ketara terutama dari segi pergerakan dan intensiti latihan. Menurutnya, ketika ditemui pada sesi latihan di Akademi Badminton Malaysia, siang tadi, fokus utama ketika ini adalah meningkatkan tahap intensiti latihan bagi memastikan pemain berusia 28 tahun itu benar-benar bersedia sebelum kejohanan bermula. Sebelum ini, Zii Jia mencetuskan kebimbangan apabila mengalami kecederaan buku lali sehingga terlepas beberapa sesi latihan, sekali gus menimbulkan tanda tanya mengenai tahap kesediaannya untuk menyertai kem negara. Bagaimanapun, Daren menjelaskan keadaan pemain itu kini terkawal dan keutamaan adalah memastikan program latihan berjalan lancar tanpa sebarang gangguan kecederaan. Beliau turut merakamkan penghargaan kepada Institut Sukan Negara (ISN) dan Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei yang menawarkan bantuan bagi memantau tahap kecergasan Zii Jia.
