It comes as two confirmed cases of hantavirus have been identified as a strain where human to human transmission is possible. South Africa’s health ministry confirmed on Wednesday the two passengers tested within the country have the Andes strain of the virus, which though rare, has been known to be transmittable between humans. Global health authorities have said the suspected outbreak may be transmitting between passengers on board the Dutch-flagged vessel, but maintained the risk to global health is low. It is currently off the coast of Cape Verde, with two sick passengers expected be medically evacuated on Tuesday night. Operator Oceanwide Expeditions said that three people, two needing urgent care and a person associated with the guest who died on 2 May, will be evacuated to the Netherlands. A total of seven suspected cases have been identified – including three deaths.
